About Us
MO&SO was founded in 2023 by the textile artist Sophie Ryan and her mother Bríd. Sophie is a textile designer who was awarded her BA in Textile and Surface Design from The National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland. Bríd is an amateur oil painter and former ICU nurse with a family business background and a passion for quality design and aesthetics.
Sophie’s designs are inspired by the textures and undulating patterns of the sea and shoreline. The deep tranquil tones of the ocean, and the muted tones of the coast are evident throughout her collections.
Sophie’s passion for textiles began in childhood on one of the many family trips to Cambodia, the country of her birth. It was there she first witnessed the art of traditional Khmer silk weaving, and her desire to work with textiles was born. During her studies at NCAD Sophie became acutely aware of the devastating effects of fast fashion on the lives of its workers and our planets ecosystem
This fuelled Sophie’s desire to create an ethical slow-fashion brand with connections to her Asian heritage, a brand where her customers could be assured that the person who tailored each item was treated ethically and fairly.
This propelled Sophie and Bríd on a journey of research and discovery through Vietnam and Cambodia on a search for ethical clothing production. As a result, all MO&SO garments are tailor-made in Vietnam from natural silk, linens, cottons and bamboo, by talented artisans, who are respected and paid appropriately for their expertise
Our Logo
Sophie has had a lifelong obsession with elephants, so when MO&SO was born, there really was only one logo that she could consider.
In the Buddhist religion, elephants are sacred and are a symbol of protection, intelligence, strength, wisdom and harmony. In the wild female elephants are amongst the world's most empathetic animals, and they are fierce protectors. When one of their own is suffering they collectively form a circle to provide protection and support.
By making a conscious effort to manufacture and shop ethically we can emulate the mighty female elephant and show our empathy and protection to our textile workers across the world.
